It surprises me sometimes when we take information for granted without questioning it. One example is defect dashboards. These show how many production defects we have with a priority order, critical, high, medium and low.

Let me challenge these standard defect dashboards and ask you to take it to the next level.

So, what do the defects even mean? Are these related to a particular release? Are they found in a specific area of the product? Or are they related to a particular area like usability or security? Now THIS information is insightful.

With that new information you could do various things depending on the results. One example, say, if you had a lot of defects realted to usability, then you could train your team in usability or get an expert involved.

Let’s start challenging the standard defect dashboard and get further information that will help us going forward. I have shared this defect dashboard as an example of taking your thinking to the next level. What else could you question and get a deeper insight on?
